David R Ewens

I thoroughly enjoyed both David Ewens’s books.

I thoroughly enjoyed both David Ewens’s books. They are real page turners, and at every stage I couldn’t wait to find out what happened next. There are some lovely descriptive passages particularly of Suffolk and northern France, and the characters are well drawn.

In the first novel, how clever to come up with the idea of setting up a mystery through clues from WW1 graves, which added a poignancy to the plot. In the second, I enjoyed the lip reading misinterpretations, as I am married to a deaf man, and whilst it’s not an area often covered in fiction, it is often funny. The very feisty young disabled woman was again unusual and a move away from stock stereotypes.

I felt drawn to recreate the journeys in both books. I look forward to reading more of Frank Sterling!
