David R Ewens

Fifth Column book launch

29th November 2016

To celebrate the publication of Fifth Column, author David R Ewens hosted a book launch at the Cathedral Lodge Hotel, Canterbury, on Saturday 26 November. Guests from all over the country, from Stroud in the South West to Stafford in the North and Solihull in the West Midlands, heard the author read an extract from the new book and thank all his reviewers, readers and supporters.

When during the evening compere Carl Parsons requested questions for the author, people did not hold back… ‘Who would play Frank Sterling in the film?’ (‘Brad Pitt?’); ‘Did you actually do the journeys described in the books?’ (‘Yes, and so did my dear long-suffering partner, Ruth Gould, on one occasion from Harwich to Tilbury by bus – it took most of a day’; ‘How much of you is there in Sterling?’ (‘As little as possible, though others may have a different view.’)

Amidst the schmoozing and buffet, compere and author supervised a ‘Frank Sterling’ quiz and draw (prize: a signed copy of Fifth Column, what else?) won by Ann Murphy.

The evening finished with book signings and people drifted off, their way to Christ Church Gate illuminated by the cathedral lit up in all its nocturnal glory.
